Valhalla Schools Superintendent Karen Geelan, who was suspended in December last year for undisclosed reasons, has resigned from the district. In her stead, administrator Christina Howe will serve as interim superintendent of schools until June 2020.

“The Valhalla Union Free School District and Superintendent of Schools Karen Geelan have reached an agreement resolving her employment relationship with the district,” school officials announced. “Dr. Geelan has resigned her position and the Board of Education appointed veteran Valhalla administrator Christina Howe to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools until June 30, 2020.

“No further information regarding this personnel matter will be shared at this time.”

The Board of Education passed resolutions in December to suspend Geelan with full pay and benefits “during the pendency of a hearing upon charges as presented to the Board at this meeting as set forth in a letter to be issued to said employee.”

The nature of Geelan’s discretions has not been released by the Board of Education or other school officials. Her contract was set to run through 2021 with an annual salary of more than $200,000.
